Quarterly Chapter Meeting Minutes – Saturday, July 9, 2022

      1. Norm from the Donner Summit Historical Society dropped in to say hello and touch base with the chapter.
    3. Ken
      1. 2nd meeting: Gave an invitation to visit the Clair Tappaan Lodge built in the 1930s. His Dad was on the ski patrol. Grand reopening from 3-7pm today. All are welcome to join. Free food and drink!
    4. Stephen
      1. Lives in Carson City, NV. Highway author: He has written about Highways 99 and 101 and America's First Highway Trails.
    5. Tim and Susan:
      1. 2/8 River City Corvette Clubs: Travel writer for a Stockton newspaper.

  4. Approval of April 2022 Minutes
    1. Paul motioned to approve the April 2022 minutes. Trey seconded the motion. Motion passed with no changes needed.
  5. Meritorious Award Presentation
    1. The award goes to Trey and Monica Pitsenberger. They jumped right into the Lincoln Highway Association. They are constantly exploring the highway and finding new things to share at every meeting. They have taken on signing the highway with paint. They continue to revisit their work and clean up graffiti and touch up their work. Thanks Trey and Monica for all your work!!
  6. Approval of April 2022 Minutes
    1. Paul motioned to approve the April 2022 minutes. Trey seconded the motion. Motion passed with no changes needed.
  7. Officer and committee reports
    1. Neil Rodrigues: State Director
      1. Was not able to attend today due to the death of his father and his mother’s health. Our thoughts and prayers are with Neil and his family.
    2. Joel Windmiller: President
      1. Clarksville will be the trial section for painting LH signage on the road. Trey and Monica are spearheading this and are making the stencil.
      2. June 12-20: Eastern Third Tour was the first of three tours that follows the final 1928 alignment of the Lincoln Highway. Tour guides Paul Gilger & Jim Cassler lead a group of members from New York to Joliet, Illinois. They stopped at numerous historic sites along the roadside. It was a trip packed with fun and adventure. Paul Gilger will give a presentation of the tour during our summer chapter meeting.
      3. June 20–24: Illinois Chapter hosted the annual conference in Joliet, after a three-year absence due to the pandemic. During the conference there were tours of the Lincoln Highway which included
      4. Exploration of the Dixie Highway of Carl Fisher
      5. US 66 (“The Mother Road”), which was created in 1926 and paved the way from Chicago to LA. This highway was a primary route for those who migrated west, especially during the Dust Bowl of the 1930s. It was recognized in popular culture by the 1946 hit song "(Get Your Kicks on Route 66_Route_66))".
      6. Next year, California will host the 2023 national conference. Our committee is currently working on the agenda which will include bus tours of the Donner and Echo Summit alignments of the Lincoln. There will be a pre-conference self-guided driving tour from the Western Terminus Marker to Folsom. In addition, there will be a post-conference self-guided driving tour from Folsom to Duarte Garage in Livermore. The Folsom–Rancho Cordova area will host the conference — details are still in progress. Awards dinner will be held at the Mohanna Ranch and event center, the same location which hosted the LH 100th Anniversary tour California Dinner in 2013.
      7. Lake Street traffic slow project San Francisco: No additional updates from my last report. I am currently waiting for a response from the city to install a Lincoln Highway historical plaque.
      8. “L” California Chapter roadway painting project: Monica Pitsenberger is currently working on the stencil which will be used on concrete alignments in El Dorado and Placer Counties. Waiting for replies from Caltrans and local county public works departments for painting “L”s along alignments under state or county control.
      9. Echo Summit Lodge: October 8 chapter meeting will be held at the Echo Summit Lodge, currently managed by the California Alpine Club. I am researching having a food truck set up prior to meeting so we can enjoy lunch at the lodge. Meeting details to follow. But, if you are here, you probably already received them.
    3. Trey Pitsenberger: Vice President/Signage/Traveler/Chapter Historian
      1. Gary Kinst book update: Gary's family will donate his historic materials to be kept in our archives. There is a contact at Arcadia Text and it is proceeding.
      2. Presentation on Donner Summit: The most historic square mile in California
    4. Grant Gassman: Treasurer's report
      1. Deposit: $126 from national
      2. Dispersements: $200 to Joel
    5. Paulette Johnston: Secretary
      1. No report submitted.
    6. Mark Hoffman: Tours
      1. Unable to make it to the meeting
      2. Next summer's convention: He did not get any response from Rancho Cordova. He will continue to work on getting information for hotels.

      1. Jimmy is still redesigning our website.
